Overview
I Prefer Hotel Rewards is the loyalty program of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, a collection of independent luxury and boutique properties. It earns 10 points per dollar, which sounds generous until you look at what a point is worth. Both Capital One and Citi transfer into it, and Citi cut its ratio in half in April 2026.
This guide covers the earning rate, how the Rewards Certificate system actually values your points, the transfer routes, and where the program does and does not make sense. For the cards that feed it, see our roundup of the best credit cards.
I Prefer Hotel Rewards overview
Preferred Hotels & Resorts is a soft brand collection rather than a chain, similar in structure to The Leading Hotels of the World. Each hotel is independently owned and joins the collection for distribution, so the on-property experience varies by design.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Collection | Preferred Hotels & Resorts, independent luxury and boutique properties |
| Cost to join | Free |
| Tiers | Three membership levels |
| Earning rate | 10 points per $1 on room rates |
| How points are used | Fixed-value Rewards Certificates |
| Point value | Roughly 0.2 cents each |
| U.S. transfer partners | Capital One 1:2, Citi 1:2 since April 19, 2026 |
What a point is actually worth
Ten points per dollar looks like a strong earning rate until you convert it. Points buy fixed-value Rewards Certificates, which work out to roughly 0.2 cents per point. Earning 10 points on a dollar therefore returns about 2 cents, or a 2% rebate on room spending.
Because certificates carry a set value rather than covering a whole night, they behave more like a discount voucher than a free-night award. That makes the program predictable, but it also caps the upside: you can never get outsized value from a peak-season luxury stay the way you can with a fixed award chart.
Transfer partners and the 2026 Citi cut
Two U.S. bank programs transfer into I Prefer, and one of them got materially worse in 2026.
| Program | Ratio | 1,000 points become |
|---|---|---|
| Capital One Miles | 1:2 | 2,000 I Prefer points |
| Citi ThankYou Rewards | 1:2 | 2,000 I Prefer points |
At 1:2 and 0.2 cents per point, transferring 1,000 bank points yields about $4 of certificate value. Almost any other use of those points beats that, so treat these transfer routes as a last resort rather than a plan.
Membership tiers
Three levels, based on tier qualifying points earned in a 12-month period measured from your enrollment or upgrade anniversary. Members do not have to wait for that anniversary to move up: crossing the next threshold promotes you immediately.
Tier qualifying points come from paid stays at the standard 10 points per dollar, so status here tracks room spending directly rather than nights or segments.
Is I Prefer worth it?
Joining is free and takes a minute, so if you are staying at a Preferred property anyway, there is no reason not to. The program also runs regular promotions, including certificate offers for stays at newly added hotels, which can be worth more than the base earning.
- Low point value: Around 0.2 cents each, which caps the program at roughly a 2% rebate.
- Poor transfer economics: Both bank routes now sit at 1:2, worth about $4 per 1,000 bank points.
- Certificates, not free nights: Fixed-value vouchers remove any chance of outsized value.
Bottom line
Join I Prefer for the free membership benefits and the promotions, and let points accumulate from stays you were making anyway. Do not transfer bank points in, because at 1:2 into a currency worth 0.2 cents you are giving up most of their value.
If you like independent luxury hotels, compare this program against Leaders Club, which pays considerably better per point. For more, see our guide to the best hotel credit cards and subscribe to our newsletter.
Frequently Asked Questions about I Prefer Hotel Rewards
How much is an I Prefer point worth?
Roughly 0.2 cents. Points buy fixed-value Rewards Certificates rather than free nights, so the 10 points per dollar earning rate works out to about a 2% rebate on room spending. Always convert to cents before comparing programs.
Which credit card points transfer to I Prefer?
Capital One Miles and Citi ThankYou Rewards, both at 1:2. Citi transferred at 1:4 until April 19, 2026, when the ratio was cut in half for Strata Elite, Strata Premier, and Prestige cardholders.
Should I transfer points to I Prefer?
Generally no. At 1:2 into a currency worth about 0.2 cents, 1,000 bank points produce roughly $4 of certificate value. Almost any other use of Capital One or Citi points returns more, so keep these routes as a last resort.
How do I Prefer tiers work?
Three levels, based on tier qualifying points earned over a 12-month period measured from your enrollment or upgrade anniversary. You are promoted as soon as you cross a threshold rather than having to wait for the anniversary date.
Is I Prefer free to join?
Yes. Membership costs nothing, and the program runs regular promotions, including Rewards Certificates for stays at newly added properties. If you are booking a Preferred hotel anyway, joining first costs nothing and adds value.
How does I Prefer compare with Leaders Club?
Both cover independent luxury hotels, but Leaders Club pays far better per point and offers stronger on-property benefits at its free tier. I Prefer earns more points per dollar, though each one is worth much less.
