United Airlines’ MileagePlus Premier status offers frequent flyers valuable benefits, including upgrades, priority services, waived fees and much more. Whether you’re a business traveler or a leisure flyer aiming to level up, here’s everything you need to know about the tiers, benefits and requirements for achieving elite status in 2025.

What is United MileagePlus Premier status?

United MileagePlus Premier status rewards frequent flyers with benefits like complimentary upgrades, bonus miles, priority services, free checked baggage and Star Alliance perks. The program has four tiers: Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum and Premier 1K, each offering more benefits.

To qualify, members earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) or Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) within a calendar year. Premier status lasts until the end of the following year and January 31 of the year after. For example, achieving status in 2025 lasts until January 31, 2027.

Million Miler lifetime status

United Airlines’ Million Miler program rewards loyalty by offering lifetime Premier status. Members earn Premier Gold at 1 million miles, Premier Platinum at 2 million, Premier 1K at 3 million and Global Services at 4 million miles. You can designate a household companion to also receive your status, but starting in 2027, companions of 1 Million Milers will receive only Premier Gold status, regardless of the Million Miler’s current status level, while companions of higher Million Miler tiers will continue to inherit their sponsor’s earned status

Global Services

United Global Services is the top-tier elite status in the MileagePlus program, ranked above Premier 1K. It is reserved for United’s most valuable customers, typically based on high annual spending or corporate contracts. It’s mostly invite-only, and the only published way to earn Global Services status it to earn 4 million lifetime flight miles. Members enjoy exclusive perks designed to provide a seamless and luxurious travel experience. Benefits include priority upgrades, exclusive check-in and boarding, lounge access, dedicated support and tarmac transfers.

United status requirements

Now, let’s take a look at the current requirements for United status:

Premier Silver15 PQF + 5,000 PQP6,000 PQP
Premier Gold30 PQF + 10,000 PQP12,000 PQP
Premier Platinum45 PQF + 15,000 PQP18,000 PQP
Premier 1K60 PQF + 22,000 PQP28,000 PQP
  • PQF (Premier Qualifying Flights): Earned per flight segment.
  • PQP (Premier Qualifying Points): Earned through spending on base fares, cobranded credit cards, upgrades and partner flights.

A minimum of four flights on United or United Express is required to qualify for any tier.

How to earn PQPs

PQPs are essential for achieving MileagePlus Premier elite status.

You earn 1 Premier Qualifying Point (PQP) for every dollar spent on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges for United-issued tickets. However, government taxes, airport fees and other mandatory charges do not count toward PQP earnings. For example, if you purchase a $500 ticket that includes $100 in taxes and fees, you would earn 400 PQPs based on the remaining $400 in qualifying spend.

All fare classes earn PQPs, but Basic Economy tickets are limited. They do not earn Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) and offer fewer elite benefits. When booking through United’s website, you can see the exact number of PQPs and PQFs a flight will earn by clicking the “Details” link next to the fare.

United cobranded credit cards

United’s cobranded credit cards allow you to earn PQPs through spending. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect:

United Quest℠ Card1 PQP per $20 spentUp to 18,000
United Club℠ Infinite Card1 PQP per $15 spentUp to 28,000
United Business Card1 PQP per $20 spentUp to 4,000

MileagePlus award flights on United metal

You’ll earn 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles you redeem on United or United Express flights, including for seat upgrades.

United awards the PQPs from award travel to the traveler taking the flight, not the person who redeemed the miles. For example, redeeming 15,000 miles would earn 150 PQPs.

United Airlines lets you earn PQPs on partner flights, including those with Star Alliance and select non-alliance partners. However, how many PQPs you earn depends on the airline, how you book and what cabin you fly.

If you book your flight on united.com, you can see the PQP earning rates during the booking process, but if you book directly through another channel (i.e., with a partner airline) and credit your flight to United, your earning rates can be complicated.

PQPs on partner flights are based on award miles earned, which depend on distance flown, fare class and the partner’s accrual rules. United converts award miles into PQPs at two different rates:

  • Preferred partners: 1 PQP per 5 award miles
  • Nonpreferred partners: 1 PQP per 6 award miles.

For example, a flight earning 3,000 award miles would give you 600 PQPs with a preferred partner or 500 PQPs with a nonpreferred partner.

United also caps how many PQPs you can earn per flight segment:

  • Economy/Premium Economy: Max 750 PQPs (preferred), 500 PQPs (nonpreferred)
  • Business/First: Max 1,500 PQPs (preferred), 1,000 PQPs (nonpreferred)

So even if your flight earns more than these thresholds, you’ll be capped at the segment maximum.

To learn more about this, you can refer to the “Earning Premier credit” section on this webpage.

Seat upgrades

You can earn 1 PQP per dollar on these purchases:

  • Preferred seating.
  • Economy Plus seating.
  • Paid cabin upgrades.
  • Co-pays for mileage upgrades.

Exclusions: Taxes and fees related to these purchases do not count toward PQPs.

How to get the most value from United elite status

It takes a lot to earn United status, so you should know how to maximize it.

Maximize complimentary upgrades

As a Premier member, your upgrade priority increases with each tier. Outside of Global Services, Premier 1K members enjoy the highest priority, followed by Premier Platinum, Premier Gold and Premier Silver.

If you want more upgrades, consider booking flights during off-peak times when there are fewer premium cabin passengers.

If it doesn’t look like you’re going to receive a complimentary upgrade, you can use your MileagePlus miles or PlusPoints to purchase an upgrade to a higher class of service. Depending on the route and availability, this can be a better value than paying for an upgrade.

Leverage mileage bonuses and bonus miles

Premier members earn bonus miles on top of the base miles they accrue for flights. The higher your elite status, the more bonus miles you earn — Premier Silver members get a 7-mile bonus for every mile flown, Premier Gold members get 8 miles, Premier Platinum members get 9 miles and Premier 1K members receive a 11-mile bonus.

We recommend using your miles for high-value redemptions, such as upgrading to business or first class, booking international flights or using miles on partner airlines within the Star Alliance network. For maximum value, plan your awards for peak travel times, as redemptions during peak seasons can sometimes be more expensive in cash.

Use your checked bag benefit

One of the most practical perks of elite status is the complimentary checked baggage allowance. Premier members enjoy free checked bags, which can save you money on each trip. The number of free bags varies by status level: Premier 1K members typically get 3 free checked bags, while Premier Gold and Platinum members get 2 free checked bags.

Included in your status is an extra weight allowance for your checked bags. This is especially useful for long-haul flights or when traveling with large or heavy items.

Priority support

Though an often overlooked benefit, Premier members have access to a dedicated customer service line, which allows you to get faster responses to any inquiries, issues or changes to your flight. This VIP service ensures you get priority handling in case of cancellations or delays.

When flight disruptions or cancellations happen, elite members receive priority rebooking assistance. United staff can assist you in finding alternative flights more quickly.

Premier 1K members are given a 24/7 hotline for immediate support, which is invaluable during irregular operations or when traveling to remote locations. This personalized support ensures you have peace of mind no matter where you are in the world.

Plan for long-term benefits with lifetime status

After flying 1 million paid miles with United, you will earn Lifetime Premier status. This milestone gives you continued elite benefits without the need to requalify every year. While it takes time and dedication to reach this level, the long-term perks make it a valuable goal for loyal travelers.

Is United status worth it?

United MileagePlus Premier status is valuable for frequent flyers who can maximize its benefits, such as upgrades, free checked bags and lounge access. The cost of achieving status varies by tier, with higher tiers offering better returns thanks to the increased perks. For instance, Premier 1K offers a higher return compared to Premier Silver, but that largely depends on whether you can use your PlusPoints to confirm long-haul Polaris upgrades, which typically cost thousands of dollars.

Living near a United hub and regularly flying internationally can make the program more appealing. However, occasional travelers or those in non-hub cities might find it less worthwhile. Ultimately, you should evaluate your travel habits and compare loyalty programs and strategies before committing to United.

Bottom line

United Airlines MileagePlus Premier status provides frequent flyers with a variety of valuable perks, from complimentary upgrades and bonus miles to priority services and free checked baggage. With four distinct tiers — Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K — there’s an opportunity for travelers to unlock increasingly generous benefits based on their level of commitment.

Maximizing your status involves strategically leveraging all your benefits, and for those dedicated to long-term loyalty, reaching lifetime status through Million Miler miles offers a lasting advantage. But one thing is for sure — whether you’re a business traveler or a leisure flyer, United’s elite status can significantly enhance your travel experience.
