Asia Miles Suspends Japan Airlines Award Bookings Until Further Notice

Cathay Pacific's Asia Miles program has suspended Japan Airlines award redemptions until further notice. As of October 9, 2026, members cannot book new award tickets on JAL flights, and they cannot change existing award tickets that include a JAL segment. Award tickets already issued remain valid for travel as booked.
Cathay has given no reason for the suspension and no end date. For U.S. travelers, the risk starts one step earlier: Asia Miles is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles and Bilt Rewards, so points moved to Asia Miles for a JAL award are stuck there until Cathay reverses course.
Members who try to book or modify a JAL award now see a message saying that redemption of Japan Airlines award tickets is temporarily suspended until further notice. The same message says existing JAL award bookings can still be used for travel as normal, and that Cathay will post an update if anything changes.
Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines both belong to the oneworld alliance, which normally lets members of one airline's program redeem miles on the other's flights. The block covers Japan Airlines award tickets as a whole, so it reaches flights between the United States and Japan as well as JAL's domestic network inside Japan.
Your ticket is still good. Fly it on the dates and flights you booked.
The problem is flexibility. Cathay is not processing changes to award tickets that include JAL flights, so a change of plans on your side cannot be handled the usual way while the suspension lasts. Treat your dates as fixed.
Transfers from a bank program to an airline program cannot be reversed. If your plan was to move points into Asia Miles and book JAL, keep them in their original program until Cathay lifts the suspension.
| Program | Transfer to Asia Miles | Use for JAL awards right now |
|---|---|---|
| American Express Membership Rewards | 1,000 points = 800 Asia Miles | No, suspended |
| Capital One Miles | Transfer partner | No, suspended |
| Bilt Rewards | 1:1 | No, suspended |
JAL's own program, JAL Mileage Bank, is the most direct alternative. Bilt Rewards transfers to Japan Airlines at 1:1, and Capital One Miles transfers to JAL Mileage Bank at a 2:1.5 ratio, so 1,000 Capital One miles become 750 JAL miles. For background on that route, our coverage of that launch explains how the partnership works.
Other oneworld programs also price JAL flights. If you already hold AAdvantage miles, search JAL space there first. Bilt also transfers at 1:1 to Atmos Rewards, the program shared by Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Prices and seat availability differ from one program to the next, so compare the full cost, taxes and fees included, before you move any points.
Search for award space first, then transfer. Until Cathay posts an update, Asia Miles is the wrong destination for points meant for a Japan Airlines flight: route Bilt or Capital One points to JAL Mileage Bank, or check AAdvantage and Atmos Rewards. If you already hold a JAL award booked with Asia Miles, fly it as planned and avoid any change.
