British Airways Tier Points: Silver Rises to 8,000 and Gold to 21,000 From April 2027

British Airways is raising the bar for elite status in the British Airways Club. From April 1, 2027, Silver requires 8,000 British Airways tier points instead of 7,500, and Gold requires 21,000 instead of 20,000. Bronze stays at 3,500. The new requirements are posted on British Airways' tier points page.
The larger change hits premium cabins. The fixed bonus earned on a basic Club World business fare drops from 500 to 200 tier points per flight, First drops from 650 to 300, and World Traveller Plus premium economy drops from 275 to 175. American Airlines and Iberia long-haul premium flights take the same cuts. Any flight booked before November 25, 2026 keeps the current bonuses, whatever the travel date.
The tier point collection year runs from April 1 to March 31. Starting with the year that opens on April 1, 2027, the thresholds are higher for the two top tiers.
| Tier | April 2026 to March 2027 | From April 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 0 | 0 |
| Bronze | 3,500 | 3,500 |
| Silver | 7,500 | 8,000 |
| Gold | 20,000 | 21,000 |
The flight-count route is still there: 25 flights with a British Airways code earn Bronze, and 50 earn Silver, within the same April-to-March year.
British Airways awards 1 tier point per GBP 1 of eligible spend on its flights. Eligible spend is the fare plus carrier-imposed charges; airport charges and government taxes do not count. On top of that, every flight earns a fixed number of extra tier points based on haul, cabin and fare type.
Those extra tier points are what shrink on long-haul premium fares from April 1, 2027. Short-haul flights and long-haul economy (World Traveller) keep their current extra tier points.
| Cabin and fare type | Current rate | From April 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| World Traveller Plus, Premium Economy | 275 | 175 |
| World Traveller Plus, Semi-Flex | 375 | 375 |
| World Traveller Plus, Flex | 475 | 475 |
| World Traveller Plus, Fully-Flex | 575 | 575 |
| Club World, Business | 500 | 200 |
| Club World, Semi-Flex | 700 | 400 |
| Club World, Flex | 900 | 600 |
| Club World, Fully-Flex | 1,100 | 800 |
| First, First | 650 | 300 |
| First, Semi-Flex | 850 | 500 |
| First, Flex | 1,050 | 700 |
| First, Fully-Flex | 1,250 | 900 |
The cut is steepest on the cheapest premium fares. A round trip on a basic Club World business fare is two flights, so the extra tier points fall from 1,000 to 400. The same round trip in First falls from 1,300 to 600. Fully-Flex fares lose less in relative terms: Club World Fully-Flex goes from 1,100 to 800 per flight.
Flights marketed by American Airlines or Iberia and credited to the British Airways Club also earn extra tier points by cabin. From April 1, 2027:
For a US-based member who credits American Airlines flights to British Airways, a business class round trip to Europe on an AA flight number earns 600 fewer extra tier points under the new rates.
The current extra tier point rates still apply in two cases:
The new rates only apply to flights departing on or after April 1, 2027 that were booked on or after November 25, 2026. If you already know you will fly Club World or First next spring or summer, booking now locks in the larger bonus.
Tier point milestones pay bonus Avios as you climb. From April 1, 2027, the milestones are:
If you pay in US dollars, British Airways converts the amount to GBP using the IATA five-day exchange rate on the day of purchase, then awards tier points on that converted amount. A weaker dollar means fewer tier points for the same ticket.
Status earned during a collection year lasts for the rest of the current membership year, which ends on April 30, plus the full following membership year. Reward flights earn no tier points, but paid add-ons such as seats and bags earn 2 tier points per GBP 1.
US flyers weighing where to credit American Airlines flights can compare these numbers with the American Airlines elite status guide. Avios earned from a British Airways Visa Signature card go toward award flights; our breakdown of the Chase Avios cards covers the current offers. If a Club World or First trip after April 1, 2027 is already on your calendar, book it before November 25, 2026 to keep the larger bonus of up to 1,250 extra tier points per flight. If you chase Silver or Gold mainly through cheaper premium fares or AA business class, expect to need more paid flights from April 2027, and compare that cost against crediting to AAdvantage instead.
