United First Base Fares: What the Cheapest First Class Ticket Drops

United is adding a cheaper, stripped-down ticket to the front of the plane. Starting in fall 2026, United First on domestic flights and United Business on short international routes are sold in three tiers: Base, Standard and Flexible. The new United First Base fare keeps the same seat and the same onboard service, but it drops free seat selection, one of the two free checked bags and any chance to change your flight.
Base tickets are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks. If you buy United premium seats with cash, or count on those trips to earn United MileagePlus miles and status, the tier you pick at checkout now decides what you actually get.
Long-haul United Polaris business class and Premium Plus already moved to tiered pricing earlier in 2026. With this expansion, every United cabin now has a bare-bones option.
| Benefit | Base | Standard | Flexible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat selection | For a fee | Included | Included |
| Checked bags | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Carry-on bag | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Flight changes | Not allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
| Refund | Non-refundable | Non-refundable | Fully refundable |
| United Club (United Business only) | Included | Included | Included |
The onboard product does not change between tiers. A Base passenger in United First gets the same seat, meal service and drinks as someone who paid for Flexible. The difference is everything around the seat.
Base is built for travelers who only care about the seat. Here is what it removes compared with a Standard fare.
If you travel with a partner, the seat fee is the first cost to price in: without it, nothing guarantees you sit together. And because Base tickets cannot be changed at all, a schedule shift means buying a new ticket.
United Business Base still includes United Club access. That is a real difference from Delta, where Basic Business loses lounge access on January 18, 2027.
Keep the scope in mind, though. A United premium ticket includes United Club access only in United Business on international flights and on U.S. transcontinental flights. Domestic United First never came with lounge access, so Base changes nothing there.
Premier status does not waive the Base rules. Elites keep their own checked bag allowance, but the seat fee, the ban on changes and the non-refundable ticket still apply to them. Base fares also earn fewer MileagePlus miles than Standard or Flexible fares.
If you are working toward a tier, check what a Base ticket earns before you buy it. Our guide to United Airlines elite status explains how Premier qualification works, and our guide to American, Delta and United upgrade certificates covers the other way to sit up front.
Delta moved first. Delta First Basic went on sale on July 8, 2026, in select domestic and Latin American markets, and Delta charges up to $500 to change or cancel a basic premium ticket. United takes a simpler line: a Base ticket in United First or United Business cannot be changed and is not refunded.
Book United First Base only when your dates are fixed, you travel light or have an elite bag allowance, and you do not mind where you sit. In every other case, compare the Standard price first: the gap buys you a chosen seat, a second bag and the right to change your flight.
