United’s 2027 Route Expansion: What It Means for MileagePlus and Aeroplan
United announced 10 new international cities for 2027, the largest network expansion in its history. The new United routes include two French cities that no US airline serves nonstop today, Toulouse and Marseille, plus Luxembourg, Ibiza, Valencia and five others. Tickets went on sale immediately.
For points travelers, the interesting part is not the map. It is that five of these routes fly on the Airbus A321XLR, a narrow-body jet with only 20 Polaris suites. A small premium cabin means award seats will be thin, and it means the way you book matters more than usual. You have two doors into these flights: MileagePlus and Aeroplan.

The five A321XLR routes and when they start
These are the transatlantic routes United confirmed for the A321XLR, all new to its network.

The other new cities are Okinawa, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania and Terceira, served from Newark, Washington Dulles and San Francisco. Most of the European routes run seasonally into September or October. Luxembourg is the exception and operates year round.
Two French cities, no connection required
Toulouse and Marseille are the headline for anyone who travels to France regularly. Today both require a connection, usually through Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt. From April and June 2027, you can fly there directly from the East Coast.
That matters for award travel in a practical way. A connection through a European hub adds a second segment where award space has to line up, and it often adds carrier-imposed surcharges depending on which partner operates the flight. A nonstop on United metal removes both problems at once.

Booking with MileagePlus
United dropped its published award chart years ago, so MileagePlus prices these flights dynamically. The number of miles moves with cash fares and demand, which cuts both ways. A quiet Tuesday in late April to Toulouse can price reasonably. The first week of June to Marseille will not.
Two things work in your favor as a MileagePlus member. Award space on United metal is released to United members first in practice, and cardholders get access to additional saver space that partners cannot see. If you hold a co-branded United card, check availability while signed in, since the calendar you see is not the same one a partner program searches.
Why Aeroplan is worth a look
Air Canada Aeroplan can book United flights as a Star Alliance partner, and it is often the better tool for US travelers. Aeroplan prices partner flights from a published chart based on the zones you fly between and the distance flown, so you can estimate the cost before you search. United sits in Aeroplan’s select partner group, where pricing starts at a published floor and moves with demand, so treat the chart as a guide rather than a promise.
The bigger advantage is where the points come from. Aeroplan takes 1:1 transfers from American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Capital One, which means three of the largest US points balances can reach these seats. MileagePlus takes transfers from Chase and Bilt only. If your points sit with Amex or Capital One, Aeroplan is your route onto a United flight to Marseille.
One caution: Aeroplan raised prices across much of its chart on June 1, 2026, and premium cabins took the largest increases. The program is still competitive, but run the math against MileagePlus rather than assuming Aeroplan wins. What to do now
- Search both programs: price the same date on united.com and on Aeroplan before you move any points.
- Do not transfer early: confirm the seat exists first. Transfers to either program are one way and cannot be reversed.

- Book early for June: Marseille and Valencia start at the beginning of peak summer, when award space is scarcest.
- Consider the shoulder dates: Toulouse opens April 26 and Luxembourg April 2, well before summer pricing kicks in.
Bottom Line
Ten new cities is a lot of new award inventory, and the two French routes fill a real gap for travelers who have been connecting through Paris for years. The catch is cabin size. Twenty Polaris suites per flight means the good seats go early, and a route that launches in June starts life in the busiest month of the year.
The flights are on sale now, which is unusual this far out and gives you a long runway. If you are holding Amex or Capital One points, Aeroplan is the path worth learning. If your points sit with Chase, you can reach either program and should price both. Either way, check availability before you transfer anything.
