Amex Travel Airbnb Guide: Points, Luxe Stays and Credits

Amex Travel Airbnb bookings let U.S. cardmembers reserve homes through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App. According to American Express's Airbnb page, Platinum and Business Platinum cardmembers earn 5X Membership Rewards points on eligible prepaid bookings. Airbnb Luxe stays can also qualify for statement credits, with separate conditions.
The main decision is whether the particular home, final price, and cancellation policy work for your trip. A points multiplier is useful only after that comparison. This guide explains the booking process and the benefits under the official terms effective October 22, 2026. All amounts below are in U.S. dollars.
Search the Homes section on AmexTravel.com or in the Amex Travel App. The booking must be prepaid in full with the eligible U.S. Consumer or Business American Express card, and the cardmember must stay at the property. Booking access and benefit eligibility are separate questions: a card that can pay for a home may not provide the Platinum credits.
Before completing your first booking, link an Airbnb account to your American Express online account. Both accounts must use the same name. Only one Airbnb account can be linked to an Amex online account at a time. If you later disconnect the accounts, you must link an account again before another qualifying booking.
The official terms limit these short-term rental bookings to 27 consecutive nights. Properties, availability, and individual host restrictions can vary. Read the listing's occupancy, minimum-stay, deposit, optional-service, and cancellation conditions before paying.
A booking made directly with Airbnb is different from a booking made with Airbnb through Amex Travel. For the Platinum 5X benefit, use the specified Amex website or travel app and pay in advance. Adding an Amex card to an ordinary Airbnb booking does not turn it into an Amex Travel booking.
The same distinction matters for the Lodging Credit and the booking that activates the Experiences credit. A regular Airbnb home is not automatically an Airbnb Luxe property. Confirm the property designation before relying on either credit.
Amex Travel also differs from the main Amex account app. The travel app handles bookings and itineraries, while the account app handles card management. Our Amex Travel application guide explains the distinction, including the separate Centurion Lounge waitlist.
The official Airbnb page lists different earning rates by card. These are total points per eligible dollar, rather than bonus points added on top of another multiplier. Check the benefit terms for the card actually used to pay.
| Card | Eligible prepaid Airbnb | Luxe Lodging Credit | Experiences Credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Platinum | 5X | Up to $300 per half-year, shared $600 annual cap | Up to $250 per calendar year after qualifying confirmed Luxe booking |
| U.S. Business Platinum | 5X | Up to $300 per half-year, shared $600 annual cap | Up to $250 per calendar year after qualifying confirmed Luxe booking |
| Classic Green | 3X | Not this Platinum benefit | Not this Platinum benefit |
| Other eligible Membership Rewards personal/business cards | 2X | Not this Platinum benefit | Not this Platinum benefit |
The Classic Green Card has a separate travel-category provision that can cover eligible direct Airbnb purchases. Do not apply that exception to every Membership Rewards card. Corporate cards are not eligible for the additional point under the general 2X online travel benefit.
An illustrative $1,000 eligible prepaid booking earning 5X would generate 5,000 Membership Rewards points before adjustments. This calculation assigns no cash value to those points and does not establish that every line of a booking invoice earns the multiplier. Cancellations and credits can reduce the points awarded.
For eligible U.S. Platinum and Business Platinum accounts, the former Hotel Credit is now the Lodging Credit. It provides up to $600 per calendar year across qualifying prepaid bookings, split into 2 separate periods. Airbnb Luxe joins Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection as an eligible booking type.
These are account limits, not separate allowances for each additional cardmember. The same $300 half-year allowance is shared with other qualifying lodging bookings. If you have already used it on an eligible hotel, a Luxe booking does not create another $300.
The terms do not require enrollment for the Lodging Credit. They do require the correct booking channel, card, property, payment, and linked Airbnb account. A charge made outside Amex Travel does not qualify simply because the home is listed as Luxe.
For the Lodging Credit, American Express uses transaction processing to allocate the charge to a benefit period. The stated cutoffs are June 30 and December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. A booking made near a cutoff can fall into the next period if the merchant processes it later.
The date you travel is therefore not the same as the date that determines the statement-credit period. Keep the confirmation and monitor the charge rather than assuming a click on December 31 secures the current year's allowance. The terms allow up to 90 days for a qualifying lodging credit to appear.
The Hotel Collection and Airbnb Luxe already require 2 nights. From January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings also need at least 2 nights to receive the Lodging Credit. Our coverage of the two-night rule explains that change.
An eligible confirmed prepaid Airbnb Luxe booking through Amex Travel can activate up to $250 in Airbnb Experiences statement credits on a U.S. Platinum or Business Platinum account. This is a separate benefit from the Lodging Credit. It is also conditional on making and maintaining a qualifying Luxe booking.
A host's acceptance matters for Request to Book properties. If a request is declined or expires, it does not activate the credit. American Express's terms say to contact the number on the card if the benefit has not activated 72 hours after a confirmed qualifying Luxe reservation.
After activation, use the eligible card to buy qualifying Experiences sold directly through Airbnb's website or app. An Experience that sends you to another platform, such as a third-party ticket seller, is excluded. The credit is up to $250 per calendar year per account, rather than a new $250 allowance for every Luxe booking.
The Experiences benefit is tied to the calendar year of the qualifying booking confirmation. A request submitted in December but confirmed the following year activates the benefit for the following year. Check the Benefits section to see that it is available before purchasing an Experience.
Eligible Experience purchases must be made by December 31 of the relevant calendar year, and merchant processing can affect eligibility near year-end. Allow up to 8 weeks for the statement credit under the terms. Do not treat the maximum as cash available before a purchase.
If all qualifying Luxe bookings are cancelled, the Experiences benefit can lock again and credits already issued can be reversed. If another qualifying booking restores eligibility, a new eligible Experience purchase is needed after the benefit is active again. Keeping only a cancelled reservation number is not sufficient.
If a payment problem occurs, or a host does not confirm a reservation request, the official terms direct cardmembers to call the number on their card before trying to complete or modify the booking through another route. Moving to a different booking channel can change eligibility.
Airbnb manages the relationship with the host. The official Amex page directs booking modifications and cancellations to Airbnb's website or app. You can also follow Manage Your Trip on Airbnb from the trip record on AmexTravel.com.
The host's policy determines the refund displayed before cancellation. A refunded, cancelled, or modified qualifying booking can cause statement credits to be reversed. Points can also be adjusted, so evaluate a cancellation using both the supplier refund and the card benefits affected.
Keep communications about property-specific issues with the host or Airbnb through the stated support route. The Amex booking channel does not mean Amex operates the home. If the property is associated with a hotel, the terms also warn that hotel loyalty benefits and elite recognition may not apply.
Amex does not currently allow Membership Rewards Pay with Points for Airbnb bookings made through these channels. Earning points and paying with points are different functions. Do not transfer points or make a booking assuming the checkout will let you use Pay with Points.
Amex says a separate statement-credit use of points may be available after the charge posts. That is not the same as Pay with Points at booking, and its value depends on the option shown in your account. Compare it with other uses in the Membership Rewards program guide.
Suppose a qualifying 2-night Luxe booking costs $1,200 and you have the full $300 lodging allowance left in that half-year. If the charge qualifies and the credit posts, your net lodging outlay would be $900. That is a hypothetical calculation, not a quote or a promise of eligibility.
The potential Experiences credit should be counted separately, only if you would otherwise buy an eligible Experience after activation. Spending $250 on an activity you did not want is not a $250 saving. Likewise, do not value earned points as guaranteed cash.
Both U.S. Platinum products carry an $895 annual fee in the current card catalog. A single lodging booking is only part of the decision to hold either card. Compare the whole year's benefits you can actually use against alternatives in our best credit cards guide.
The Amex route is worth comparing if you already hold an eligible card, want a home that is available through the portal, and accept the prepaid rate and host's conditions. The Luxe benefits matter most when the qualifying property already suits your trip.
For an ordinary home, the main difference may be the earning rate. For Luxe, check your remaining half-year allowance and whether you have a real use for Experiences. In both cases, book for the property and total cost first, then count only benefits for which the reservation qualifies.
