Citi Strata Cards Now Limit Welcome Bonuses to Once Per Lifetime

Citi now limits the welcome bonus on its Strata cards to once per lifetime. As of September 23, 2026, the application pages for the Citi Strata Elite, the Citi Strata Premier and the Citi Strata state that the new account bonus is not available if you currently have or previously had that card. There is no waiting period anymore: if you ever held the card, the bonus is off the table.
The rule applies card by card. Holding a Strata Premier does not, on its own, block the Strata Elite bonus, and the reverse is also true. Citi's other cards keep their older wording for now: the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select still uses a 48-month window.
What the new Citi Strata wording says
Each Strata card page carries its own exclusion. The Strata Premier bonus is not available to anyone who currently has or previously had a Citi Strata Premier or a Citi Premier account. The Strata Elite bonus excludes current and past Citi Strata Elite cardholders. The no-annual-fee Citi Strata excludes current and past Citi Strata and Citi Strata Student cardholders.
| Card | Annual fee | Bonus not available if you have or had | Time limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citi Strata Elite | $595 | Citi Strata Elite | None (lifetime) |
| Citi Strata Premier | $95 | Citi Strata Premier or Citi Premier | None (lifetime) |
| Citi Strata | $0 | Citi Strata or Citi Strata Student | None (lifetime) |
| Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select | Not covered here | A bonus on this card, or a conversion that earned a bonus | 48 months |
The Strata Premier and Strata pages add a second line: you may also not be eligible for the bonus based on your history of opening, closing and using credit cards. Citi does not publish the exact criteria behind that sentence, so approval for the card and approval for the bonus are two separate questions.
Who is affected by the Citi lifetime bonus rule
The change hits three groups of readers the hardest.
- Former Citi Premier cardholders: the old Citi Premier became the Strata Premier, and Citi names both cards in the exclusion. If you had a Citi Premier years ago, you cannot earn the Strata Premier bonus.
- Strata Student cardholders: a student card opened in college now blocks the Citi Strata bonus later.
- Anyone who planned a second round: a cardholder who closed a Strata Premier and waited to reapply has no path back to the bonus.
People who never held any of these cards are not affected. They can still earn the bonus on each of the three Strata cards, one per card, subject to Citi's approval.
Other Citi cards keep the 48-month window
The lifetime wording only appears on the Strata family. On the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select, the bonus is not available if you received a new account bonus on that card in the past 48 months, or if you converted another Citi card on which you earned a bonus in the last 48 months. That is a timed restriction, not a lifetime one.
For points collectors, this means the order of applications matters more than before. The Strata Premier, the Strata Elite and the Strata all earn Citi ThankYou points, which transfer to airline and hotel partners. Each card now offers one bonus in your lifetime, so it pays to pick the moment when the offer is at its best.
How to decide before you apply
Start by checking your own history. Log in to your Citi account and look for any Citi Premier, Strata Premier, Strata Elite, Strata or Strata Student account, open or closed.
Then compare the current offer on the Citi page with past offers. A one-time bonus is worth waiting for if the current offer is lower than usual. If you are close to a large trip and the current offer suits you, there is no reason to wait: the rule does not get better with time.
Finally, think about product changes. Citi's lifetime language names the card itself, so upgrading or downgrading into a Strata card could count as having had that card. Ask Citi before you convert an account if you still want the bonus on the target card.
Bottom Line
If you have never held a Citi Strata Premier, Citi Premier, Strata Elite, Strata or Strata Student card, each of those bonuses is still open to you once. Choose your timing carefully, since there is no second chance. If you already had one of them, skip that card's bonus and look at the other Strata cards or at Citi's co-branded cards, which still use a 48-month window.
