Don’t sleep on Citi ThankYou points. You can redeem them for some of the world’s best business- and first-class seats by transferring points to Citi’s 19 airline and hotel loyalty programs, including reader favorites Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Avianca LifeMiles.

Whether you already have a stash of ThankYou points or are just about to open your first Citi credit card, it’s important to know all the ways to earn ThankYou points and the best ways to redeem them. Here’s everything you need to know about Citi ThankYou.

Citi ThankYou Rewards overview

Citi ThankYou might not be as well-known as Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards points, but it’s a program worth knowing. Here are a few of its key features:

  • Transfer to partners: ThankYou points transfer points to 15 airline and five hotel loyalty programs. Only premium Citi cards transfer points to all 19 programs.
  • No expiration: ThankYou points don’t expire so long as your account is open and in good standing.
  • Flexible redemptions: You can redeem points for travel, gift cards, statement credits and more. However, the value you get from these redemptions varies and it’s often less than booking travel.

I’ve been earning and redeeming with ThankYou since 2016, and these points have funded many of my favorite vacations.

How to earn Citi ThankYou Rewards points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points when spending on select Citi credit cards. However, only one Citi card — the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card — lets you transfer your points to all 19 of Citi’s travel partners. You can, however, earn points with other Citi cards and move the points to your Strata Premier.

Cards that earn Citi ThankYou Rewards points

Here are the Citi cards earning ThankYou points:

Consider a two-card strategy

I have two Citi ThankYou cards in my wallet: the Strata Premier and the Double Cash. When I want to stock up on ThankYou points, I use the Strata Premier for travel, EV charging, dining and groceries to earn 3 points per dollar. Then, I put the rest of my regular spending on the Double Cash to earn 2% cash back — which can be transferred to ThankYou points — on all other purchases.

Doing this ensures I never get fewer than two points per dollar on my everyday spending. So, if you can manage two credit cards, consider doing the same. It’ll speed up how many points you earn and put you closer to your next big redemption.

How to redeem Citi ThankYou Rewards points

Citi ThankYou Rewards is a transferable points program, so you have options for redeeming your rewards. You’ll typically get the best value from your points when you redeem them for travel through Citi’s transfer partners, but you can also choose to redeem them for statement credits, gift cards and more.

Citi ThankYou Rewards transfer partners

As mentioned, if you have a Citi Strata Premier or a discontinued Citi ThankYou card with an annual fee, you can transfer your points to all of Citi’s airline and hotel transfer partners.

Here’s the full list of 15 airline transfer partners:

You can also transfer to four hotel loyalty programs:

If you only have a Citi card with no annual fee, you can transfer your points to the following loyalty programs at lower transfer rates:

  • Choice Privileges (1:1.5)
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (1:0.8)
  • Wyndham Rewards (1:0.8)

Booking with Citi Travel

Citi Travel is an online travel agency powered by Booking.com. You can redeem Citi ThankYou points for hotels, flights, rental cars and other travel at a fixed rate of 1 cent per point. This isn’t the worst value, but you can often do better when booking travel through a transfer partner.

Other ways to use Citi ThankYou Rewards points

Other ways to redeem your Citi ThankYou points include:

  • Cash back: Redeem points for a statement credit, direct deposit or check for 1 cent per point in value.
  • Gift cards: Redeem points for gift cards at around 1 cent per point, with occasional discounts.
  • Pay with Points: Use points to cover purchases at Amazon, CVS, PayPal and other merchants at a rate of roughly 0.8 cents apiece.

Given these low redemption rates, we recommend avoiding these redemptions.

Maximizing Citi ThankYou Rewards points

  • Transfer to travel partners: You can get more than 2 cents per point in value when you transfer ThankYou points to airline and hotel partners. The best value is often found when booking premium cabin airfare and last-minute tickets.
  • Look for transfer bonuses: Citi frequently runs limited-time transfer bonuses for select partners. For example, we recently saw 20% transfer bonuses to Virgin Atlantic and Wyndham Rewards.
  • Avoid low-value redemptions: Skip redeeming points for cash back and gift cards since these redemptions typically give you a lower redemption rate than travel.

Citi ThankYou Rewards redemption sweet spots

With 19 transfer partners, it’s not hard to redeem Citi ThankYou points for flights to your dream destination. But some transfer partner redemptions will yield better value than others — here are a few team favorites:

  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue: Offers great redemption rates for Air France and KLM flights to Europe. These fights start at 15,000 miles, 35,000 miles and 50,000 miles in economy, premium economy and business class, respectively.
  • Avianca LifeMiles: Use LifeMiles to book Star Alliance flights with your ThankYou points. Our favorite redemptions include economy flights from the U.S. to Africa for 40,000 LifeMiles and business class flights to Asia for 85,000 LifeMiles.
  • Choice Privileges: Citi points transfer to Choice at a 1:2 ratio, meaning 1,000 Citi points are worth 2,000 Choice points. Choice redemptions start at just 6,000 Choice points per night, meaning you need just 3,000 ThankYou points for some stays.
  • Etihad Guest: Book domestic flights on American Airlines for as few as 6,000 miles in economy. Be aware that you have to pay a fee to cancel or change tickets booked with Etihad Guest.

Bottom line

Citi ThankYou Rewards points are the underdog of the transferable points world. It has fewer credit cards than rival programs, and its transfer partners are more obscure. However, there’s still immense value to be found if you know how to redeem your points properly.
