How to earn Loyalty Points

American Airlines offers many ways to earn Loyalty Points, which are essential for achieving AAdvantage elite status.

You earn 5 Loyalty Points per dollar spent on base airfare, excluding taxes and government fees, while basic economy fares earn only 2 Loyalty Points per dollar.

Elite members earn faster due to bonus miles, which also count as Loyalty Points:

  • General member: 5 Loyalty Points per dollar.
  • Gold: 7 Loyalty Points per dollar.
  • Platinum: 8 Loyalty Points per dollar.
  • Platinum Pro: 9 Loyalty Points per dollar.
  • Executive Platinum: 11 Loyalty Points per dollar.

For example, a $500 ticket with $100 in taxes earns points on the $400 base fare. For a Platinum Pro member, this would yield 3,600 Loyalty Points (400 × 9).

Earning Loyalty Points on partner flights depends on where you purchase your ticket. If you book directly with American Airlines or through an eligible partner airline using an American Airlines flight number (codeshare), you’ll earn Loyalty Points based on the price of your ticket — just like you would on an American-operated flight, as long as it’s an eligible fare class for mileage accrual. This means that the more you spend on the base fare and eligible carrier-imposed fees, the more Loyalty Points you accumulate.

However, if you purchase your ticket directly from most partner airlines and it is issued with that airline’s flight number, your earnings are based on the distance you fly and the fare class you book. Higher fare classes — such as business or first class — will earn Loyalty Points at a higher rate per mile flown compared to economy tickets. Sometimes, discounted, long-distance fares can earn you Loyalty Points for less than what it would cost on American Airlines.

American cobranded credit cards

You can earn Loyalty Points through American’s suite of Citi and Barclay’s cobranded credit cards. Most cards earn 1 Loyalty Point per dollar you spend, meaning that you can qualify for elite status entirely through card spend — $200,000 in card spend would earn you the 200,000 Loyalty Points for Executive Platinum status.

Some cards offer additional Loyalty Points for high spending:

  • AAdvantage Aviator Silver Mastercard: Earn up to 15,000 bonus Loyalty Points annually — 5,000 points each for spending $20,000, $40,000 and $50,000 in a status year.
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard: Earn 10,000 bonus Loyalty Points after reaching 50,000 Loyalty Points in a qualification year and another 10,000 after reaching 90,000 points.

It’s important to note that while sign-up bonuses and card category multipiers (i.e., 2 miles per dollar at restaurants) earn AAdvantage miles, they do not count as Loyalty Points.

AAdvantage Shopping Portal

You can earn Loyalty Points by shopping online through the AAdvantage eShopping portal. Each merchant offers a specific rate of miles and corresponding Loyalty Points per dollar spent.

For example, an eligible $500 purchase from a retailer offering 5 miles/Loyalty Points per dollar would yield 2,500 Loyalty Points (500 × 5 = 2,500).

AAdvantage Dining Program

You can enroll in the AAdvantage Dining program to earn Loyalty Points when dining at participating restaurants. Members typically earn up to 5 miles and corresponding Loyalty Points per dollar spent.

Other partner activities

You can earn Loyalty Points through activities such as booking hotels via AAdvantage Hotels or purchasing vacation packages through American Airlines Vacations.

Some partners offer higher earning rates for elite members or promotional bonuses.

SimplyMiles

You can earn extra miles and Loyalty Points on everyday purchases with SimplyMiles. U.S. Mastercard holders can link their cards, activate offers from merchants like gas stations and restaurants and earn bonus rewards when they shop.

  • Link up to three Mastercards to your AAdvantage account.
  • Activate offers and shop online or in-store.
  • Earn bonus miles and Loyalty Points automatically.

SimplyMiles works alongside other earning methods, like the AAdvantage eShopping portal, to help you reach elite status faster.

How to get the most value from American Airlines elite status

American Airlines AAdvantage elite status offers a variety of perks that can significantly enhance your travel experience. By understanding and leveraging these benefits, you can maximize the value of your elite status:

Maximizing your complimentary upgrades

One of the most valuable perks of American Airlines elite status is unlimited complimentary upgrades on eligible flights within North America. These upgrades allow you to move from Main Cabin or Premium Economy to Business or First Class, depending on availability.

  • Book early: Higher-tier elites (e.g., Executive Platinum) have priority, with upgrades processed up to 100 hours before departure.
  • Use Systemwide Upgrades: For long-haul international flights, systemwide upgrades earned through Loyalty Points Rewards can be a great way to save thousands of dollars on Flagship Business and Flagship First.
  • Travel off-peak: Flying during less busy times increases upgrade chances.

Use your benefits

Elite members enjoy priority check-in, security screening, boarding and baggage handling, which can save time and reduce stress during travel.

  • Arrive early: Use dedicated check-in counters and expedited security lanes to streamline your airport experience.
  • Board early: Boarding with Group 1 (Executive Platinum) or Group 2 (Platinum Pro) ensures overhead bin space for carry-ons.
  • Book Main Cabin Extra seats early: Higher-tier elites can select these seats at booking, while Gold members must wait until check-in.
  • Travel with companions: Depending on your status, up to eight companions can also enjoy complimentary seat benefits.

Mileage bonuses

Elite members earn significant multipiers on American Airlines flights:

  • Gold: 40% bonus
  • Platinum: 60% bonus
  • Platinum Pro: 80% bonus
  • Executive Platinum: 120% bonus

These bonuses not only increase redeemable miles but also count as Loyalty Points. That can really help you maintain or advance elite status faster.

Oneworld elite status

Oneworld offers three elite tiers — Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald — each with valuable benefits across all member airlines like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas and Qatar Airways.

Here’s a look at some of the key perks:

Ruby (AAdvantage Gold)

  • Priority check-in, standby and waitlists.
  • Preferred seating (varies by airline).

Sapphire (AAdvantage Platinum)

  • Business-class lounge access.
  • Priority boarding and extra baggage allowance.
  • All Ruby perks.

Emerald (AAdvantage Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum)

  • First-class lounge access (i.e., The Pier in Hong Kong)
  • Fast-track security, priority baggage, and first-class check-in
  • All Sapphire perks

Is American status worth it?

American Airlines AAdvantage elite status can be highly rewarding for frequent flyers who maximize its perks, including upgrades, free checked bags and priority boarding. The value of status depends on how often you fly and whether you take full advantage of benefits like Main Cabin Extra seating and Oneworld benefits.

Higher tiers, such as Executive Platinum, offer a better return on investment, especially if you can use systemwide upgrades for long-haul premium cabins. However, earning status requires significant spending.

For those who live near an American Airlines hub or frequently fly internationally, AAdvantage status can be worthwhile, especially if you also consider getting the World of Hyatt card. But if you travel infrequently or only need specific perks, it may be more cost-effective to book premium fares or use a travel credit card with similar benefits.

Bottom line

American Airlines’ AAdvantage elite status offers frequent flyers valuable perks from complimentary upgrades and priority boarding to Oneworld lounge access and waived fees. With four elite tiers — Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum — plus the exclusive ConciergeKey level, the program rewards loyalty through Loyalty Points earned via flights, credit card spending and partner activity.

Additional benefits like the Million Miler program provide lifetime status for long-term travelers, while Loyalty Point Rewards offer customizable perks as you progress. Whether you’re a casual flyer or a road warrior, understanding how to maximize AAdvantage elite status can enhance your travel experience significantly.
