Flying Blue Splits Award Tickets Into Light, Standard and Flex Fares

Flying Blue Extra featured image
To the point Flying Blue will sell Air France-KLM award tickets in three fares (Light, Standard and Flex) starting September 8, 2026. Keeping today's checked bag and flexibility will cost 20 to 30% more miles.

Big change ahead for Flying Blue award tickets. Starting September 8, 2026, every new award booking on a flight operated by Air France or KLM will come in one of three fares: Light, Standard and Flex. Awards on Flying Blue partner airlines stay exactly as they are today.

Flying Blue presents the move as “more flexibility for your travels”. In practice, keeping today’s conditions, meaning an included checked bag and the ability to change your ticket for a fee, will require 20 to 30% more miles depending on the route. Since Flying Blue partners with every major transferable currency in the US, this change touches almost everyone who collects points. What Changes on September 8

Flying Blue is copying the branded fare structure already used on Air France and KLM cash tickets. Each option targets a different traveler profile.

  • Light: the basic option, designed for traveling light, with no checked bag and no flexibility.
  • Standard: the equivalent of today’s conditions, with a checked bag and changes available for a fee.
  • Flex: the complete experience, with changes and refunds included, free seat selection and a lower mandatory cash contribution at booking.

The new structure covers all flights operated and marketed by Air France and KLM, in every booking class except La Première (P and F). An itinerary that mixes an Air France or KLM flight with a partner flight books into Standard only. You can also combine fares across cabins, but only within the same brand: Light economy pairs with Light business, never with Flex.

What Each Fare Includes

Here is the official breakdown published by Flying Blue, cabin by cabin.

In other words, Light removes the checked bag that has come with every Flying Blue award until now. The €70 change fee matches today’s rules, which now belong to the Standard fare only.

Business cabin

In business class, the Light fare only shows up in O and Z booking classes. Here is the official comparison:

Business class window seat at dusk
  • No lounge access on Light: lounge entry becomes a paid extra on a Light business award, a first for Air France-KLM.
  • One checked bag only on Light: 32 kg, versus two bags on Standard and Flex.
  • No changes or refunds on Light: the ticket is locked, unless you hold Platinum status or higher.
  • Standard: two 32 kg bags, lounge access included, changes and refunds for €70 each.
  • Flex: changes, refunds and advance seat selection included, on top of lounge access.

New Award Pricing Examples

Flying Blue shared sample pricing with specialized media ahead of the launch. The pattern is clear: today’s saver price becomes the Light fare, with its restrictions attached.

Route (one way)LightStandardFlex
Paris-New York, business60,000 miles + ~$60875,000 miles + ~$608110,000 miles + ~$302
US-Europe, Premium40,000 miles + €32350,000 miles + €32385,000 miles + €153
US-Europe, economy25,000 miles + €23730,000 miles + €23750,000 miles + €152
Berlin-Barcelona, economy10,000 miles + ~$7013,000 miles + ~$7017,000 miles + ~$70

Concretely, Standard, which matches today’s conditions, runs 20 to 30% more miles than the current saver level. On the flip side, Flex cuts carrier surcharges, sometimes by roughly half on long-haul routes. Amounts appear as communicated, in US dollars or euros depending on the example.

One more nuance, confirmed by Flying Blue: Light will only appear at the lowest award prices. A business award priced at 90,000 miles instead of 60,000 will book straight into Standard.

Elite Status Softens the Blow

Flying Blue confirms that status benefits keep applying on the day of departure, whatever fare you book.

  • Silver, Gold and Platinum: the status baggage allowance still applies, even on a Light ticket.
  • Silver and Gold: SkyPriority benefits remain, and Gold members keep lounge access.
  • Platinum, Platinum for Life and Ultimate: free changes and cancellations, including on Light awards. Flying Blue has confirmed this directly.
  • SkyTeam Elite Plus: alliance benefits such as lounge access and the extra bag stay in place.

Two more carve-outs matter. Awards booked with partner miles (Delta SkyMiles or Virgin Atlantic points, for example) on Air France or KLM flights will carry Standard conditions. And monthly Promo Rewards continue; according to early information from the program, they will be issued as Light fares.

What It Means for Your Points

Flying Blue is one of the most accessible programs in the US: it partners 1:1 with American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One miles and Bilt Rewards. Any devaluation therefore ripples through every major transferable currency.

Good timing note: Citi ThankYou is running a 20% transfer bonus to Flying Blue through August 22, 2026. Combined with a booking made before September 8, it locks in today’s conditions at a discount. Track this offer and others in our current credit card transfer bonuses guide.

If you fly Air France and KLM often, the Air France KLM Visa Signature® Credit Card also earns Flying Blue miles directly on everyday spending.

Bottom Line

Flying Blue frames this as added choice, and for travelers who genuinely fly with a backpack, the floor price survives. For everyone else, the math is simple: the award you book today, with a checked bag and €70 changes, will cost 20 to 30% more miles from September 8. Lounge access even drops out of the cheapest business awards.

The silver linings are real, though: Flex slashes surcharges, elite members keep their perks, and partner awards remain untouched. If a redemption is already on your list, book it before September 8. To stay on top of program changes like this one, subscribe to our newsletter.
